"JDS/Julien De Smet Architects has shared with us the proposal for a mixed-use development in Hangzhou, China which recently won the Belgian firm the First Prize in the invited competition. The design team also included engineering firm China CUC. The Hangzhou Gateway program includes offices, commercial, a restaurant, and a post office on an area of 23,619 m2.The concept of the building is to create a gateway that is neither closing-off or dividing the city. The 15-story tower features offices, restaurants, post office, a terraced roof garden and a sunken passage that leads through a shopping center. The rooftop terraces offer generous views to the distant nature while the stone louvers provide a sustainable solution to the office conditions. The building will become the gateway for the Gongshu District and an icon for the urban transformation of the old industrial neighborhood..." to find out more...

Interior Design “FLOATING OBSERVATORIES” - First Prize Winner at Taiwan Conceptual Tower Competition
Interior Design

"Starting from the 'geographical' visual of Taiwan - which is an island resembling a leaf - we have developed the concept of the technological tree: we have designed 8 spatial leaves (with eight being a propitious number in the local culture) in the form of zeppelin-like elevators which glide up and down the 'tree trunk" and which serve the purpose of observation decks / belvedere. I have called these elevators floating observatories because each has a nacelle which can take 50 to 80 people; they are self-sustained by helium balloons and are built from lightweight materials (borrowed from the spacecraft industry) and are wrapped in a last-generation type of membrane (PTFE) and they glide vertically on a track positioned vertically in a strong electro-magnetic field" - Dorin STEFAN, Principal, DSBA.." to find out more...

"The municipality of Rødovre, an independent municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark, announced today MVRDV and co-architect ADEPT winner of the design competition of the Rødovre Skyscraper.
The skyscraper’s shape reflects Copenhagen’s historical spire and present day high-rise blending in the skyline of the city, it further combines the two distinctive typologies of Rødovre, the single family home and the skyscraper in a vertical village. Consideration of these local characteristics leads to Copenhagen’s first contemporary high-rise..." to find out more...

"Iran-based Bonsar Architecture Studio shared with us their proposal for the Tehran Business Hotel Competition, for which they received first prize. See more images and architect’s description after the break.Tehran Business Hotel was a private competition held in the spring of 2010. Despite the routine of competitions, the process for getting the building permit was done before it’s initiation. Since the owners weren’t satisfied with the design, they decided to start a competition in order to achieve a better one. As a result, the competition was to improve the previous design to get the building permit from the municipality rather than designing from the beginning..." to find out more...

"eVolo Magazine is pleased to announce the winners of the 2010 Skyscraper Competition. Established in 2006, the annual Skyscraper Competition recognizes outstanding ideas that redefine skyscraper design through the use of new technologies, materials, programs, aesthetics, and spatial organization. The award seeks to discover young talents whose ideas will change the way we understand architecture and its relationship with the natural and built environments.Globalization, sustainability, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution, were some of the multi-layered elements taken into consideration. The first place was awarded to a project for a vertical prison designed by architecture students Chow Khoon Toong, Ong Tien Yee, and Beh Ssi Cze, from Malaysia. Their project examines the possibility of creating a prison-city in the sky, where the inmates would live in a “free” and productive community with agricultural fields and factories that would support the host city below..." to find out more winning schemes...

"The Perkins+Will design team, led by Principal and New York Office Design Director, Robert Goodwin, AIA, LEED AP was challenged with designing a sustainable urban tower, while taking into account the specific environmental and cultural characteristics of Riyadh...The design explores the typology of an urban tower in the extreme environmental conditions of Riyadh through a reinterpretation of three iconic elements of Islamic culture—the spiral minaret, the walled garden, and the mashrabiya,” said Rob Goodwin. “The design approach synthesizes the symbolic and functional qualities of these elements into a unified expression of the Foundation’s altruistic mission to protect, replenish, and care for the disadvantaged..."

"A new super skyscraper has just been announced for South Korea and will tower over all other buildings in Asia when it is complete in 2014. From a global perspective, Lotte Super Tower 123, designed by Kohn Pederson Fox, falls just short of taking the title, and will be not the tallest but the second tallest skyscraper in the world. The structure will be the tallest building in Asia and serve as the new corporate headquarters for the Lotte Group, whose subsidairy, Lotte Construction, will build it. Zoning has been approved and excavation is nearly complete. With aims towards LEED silver certification, the tower will have a strong environmental component and will be a mixed-use structure with retail, residential, offices and a hotel..." to find out more...passage & image from inhabitatinterior decoration

"Renowned mexican architect Enrique Norten (TEN Arquitectos) has been working in NY since a few years ago, with One York already built at SOHO & Tribeca. And with CASSA, his new 43-stories tall residential tower, he joins the city’s skyline.
The project includes 57 luxury residences and 166 hotel rooms, with interiors by Cetra/Ruddy, along with a 5 star restaurant, a spa, a private terrace and lounge, and other additional services.
The tower doesn´t look to find its place at the NY skyline with any “fireworks”, just a rigorous orthogonal volume with a character given by the punctured rhythm of its windows..." to find out more...

"Studio Gang Architects has earned a PETA Proggy award for using bird-deflecting elements in the 823 ft-Aqua Tower residential building and hotel that’s currently under construction in Chicago.By including an undulating exterior and specifying the use of fritted glass—which is etched with gray marks to make it easier for birds to see—the company has created a design that will help prevent birds from flying into windows. PETA’s Proggy Awards (“Proggy” is for “progress”) recognize animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture...

"Zaha Hadid's design for the Dancing Towers confirms the role of Business Bay Development at the very forefront of Dubai’s rapidly changing future. The three towers rise above the creek and project themselves as an icon for the surrounding developments and for the gulf region. The tower’s striking design creates a new presence that punctures the skyline with a powerful recognizable silhouette.
The fluid character of the towers is generated through an intrinsically dynamic composition of volumes. The towers are inter-twined to share programmatic elements and rotate to maximize the views from the site towards the creek and neighbouring developments. The design quality of the towers to act as a symbol and icon extends beyond their scale and location. These qualities are derived from the boldness of the architectural concept, from the ‘choreographed’ movement that combines the three towers in one overall gesture and ‘weaves’ with a series of public spaces through the podium, the bridges and the landscape beyond." to find out more...

Another example that silhouetted the so-called "Dancing Architecture" in Reflections at Keppel Bay, Singapore by Daniel Libeskind.
"A symphony of undulating towers is the focal point of the iconic project. These sleek curving forms of alternating heights create graceful openings and gaps between the structures. The spaces between the buildings allow for views to the horizon beyond. The resulting composition is a creative interplay of changing planes and reflections. It will contribute immensely to Singapore’s skyline and vitality as a world class city" to find out more...

Recently spotted some kind of trend of so-called "dancing architecture". One example is this impressive design by unsangdong architects. "...thought that i could make a three-dimensional apartment when i saw the movie Transformers... a three-dimensional apartment would add variety to life. If exiting apartments are built oblique lines in which each unit would be made of a naturall terrace. As such, the apartment would seem to be dancing, providing an enjoyable view and breath of fresh air...it would be created as if like a vertical skin of land made by vertical mountains...the three-dimensional approach will overcome limitations in residence programs..." to find out more...

"...the winning design creates an office tower that works to inspire informal connections and communication in a progressive way. The tower has a series of vertical atriums carved into it creating “centers” or vertical courtyards (like the traditional Chinese house). "The jury for the “Shenzhen 4 Tower in 1” Competition, chaired by Mr. Arata Isozaki, selected Coop Himmelb(l)au‘s design for Tower C, the new “Headquarter of China Insurance Group” as the winning scheme... not only recognizable by its significant form but also by its façade. The design of the façade is driven by generation of energy. The second skin of the façade is shaped by climate conditions and inner functions. This skin includes photovoltaic cells to generate electricity and also cells to reduce excessive wind pressure, shade the sun and create multi media displays. Strategies employing the form of the building to assist natural ventilation together with the use of renewable energy sources (wind and solar power) assure an energy efficient design and reduce energy consumption and reliance on fossil fuel energy sources." to find out more...

56 Leonardo would be another stunning high-rise project of 2008 besides the Dubai Rotating Tower. If the Dubai Rotating Tower is so-called dynamic arhictecture, then I would call this 56 Leonardo as "artistic architecture". Really like the part where the architect, Herzog & de Meuron integrate the art work of the scultor, Anish Kapoor to form this overall master piece.
"The latest skyscraper proposal for Manhattan looks as if it may achieve something impossible, perhaps evenabsurd: the synthesis of a number of entirely contradictoryarchitectures...A solid, geometric base knits it tightly into the urban fabric ofthe city block, while a smoother shaft takes it up intoorbit and a crown begins to dematerialise and reduce its volume as it hits the sky. The surprise here, though, is thelack of a sheath, the smooth envelope, whether boxy orrocket-like, within which skyscrapers are usuallycontained. Here the architects have stacked a series ofirregular boxes, 145 separate and unique apartments –each a response to what is going on inside – and formedand jiggled them into an extraordinary tower...If the effect on the skyline is startlingly dematerialised, its presence at street level is made manifestly materialby the inclusion of a huge sculpture...a strange, super-shiny blob that appears to be being squeezed out from under the skyscraper..."
